Baseball Loses 7-2 to Cal Poly to End Series Win Streak

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i baseball team fell 7-2 to Cal Poly on Friday night at Les Murakami Stadium.

The Rainbow Warriors (27-24, 18-11) lost their first conference series since the beginning of April. The Mustangs (37-20, 22-7) have now won nine out of ten of their conference series.

Both UH and Cal Poly were scoreless through three innings before an error to start the fourth allowed a runner to reach second base. On the next at-bat, Yorke hit a hot shot that ricocheted off of junior first baseman Jacob Igawa, scored the first run, and resulted in Igawa exiting the game. Two more walks loaded the bases, where Doss grounded out for an RBI. After intentionally walking a batter to get a force at all bags, UH walked in the inning's final run.

The next inning started the same way, and an error allowed the first batter to reach second, followed by Yorke singling home a run. The Mustangs followed up another time in the sixth when UH got out of a bases-loaded jam, as they gave up one run, but widened the gap to 5-0.

Hawai'i got on the board late in the eighth inning as graduate center fielder Cole Cabrera and sophomore utility Kyson Donahue had back-to-back singles. Junior third baseman Aaron Ujimori sac bunted to move the runners over to set up junior right fielder Matt Wong. With Wong at the dish, he poked a single past the shortstop to score the only two UH runs of the game.

Cal Poly added two more insurance runs in the ninth and extended their lead 7-2.

However, Hawai'i threatened in the ninth as they loaded the bases with only one out. Unfortunately, a line drive would turn into a double-play and end the game.

Starting pitcher Blaze Koali'i Pontes (5-1) suffered his first loss of the season tonight, where he allowed five runs, although only one earned.

Cabrera picked up two more hits against his former team, along with Wong and Miyao collecting a pair of their own. Wong also corralled the only two RBIs of the night for the Hawai'i offense.

The Rainbow Warriors return Saturday for Senior Day, with the first pitch set for 1:05 p.m. HT. We will honor five athletes and their contributions to the program following the game. Along with fan appreciation day with autographs and a photo session on the field for fans.
