CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - University of Hawai'i men's tennis player
Andre Ilagan will make his NCAA Singles Championship debut on Monday, May 23, 2022 at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex in Champaign, Ill. Ilagan, who finished the regular season ranked No. 40, will take on Alabama's Filip Planinsek in the opening round with the first serve scheduled for 12:00 p.m. HT.
Ilagan is just the second Rainbow Warrior to compete in the NCAA Men's Singles Championships. He earned the Big West's automatic bid as the highest ranked player in the league at the end of the season. The first UH player to compete at the NCAA men's singles tournament was Andreas Weber, who earned an at-large bid in 2007 when UH was still a member of the Western Athletic Conference. The NCAA singles tournament features 64 of the nation's top competitors and runs from Mary 23-28 on the campus of the University of Illinois.

ILAGAN READY TO ROLL
- Sophomore Ilagan, led Hawai'i a 9-4 dual match singles record while playing all of UH's matches at No. 1
- The Honolulu native was voted the 2022 Big West Player of the Year. He also was named UH's Bonham Award winner (male) and last week was named to the CoSIDA all-academic, District 8 first team.
- In the fall of 2021, an unranked Ilagan entered the ITA All-American tourney in the qualifier round and proceeded to upset six ranked players en route to advancing to the tourney semifinals--the farthest any Rainbow Warrior had ever gone. For his efforts, Ilagan became the first UH player to be invited to compete in the ITA Fall Championships.
- After his phenomenal run in the fall, Ilagan entered the 2022 spring season ranked at No. 11--the highest ever for a UH player
FIRST ROUND OPPONENT
- Alabama freshman Planinsek is currently ranked at No. 25 in the ITA poll
- The Hoce, Slovenia, native led the Crimson Tide playing at the No. 1 spot all season, posting a team-leading 21 singles wins with 14 coming in dual match competition
- He notched wins over seven ranked players during the season--including the top-ranked player in the country, Ben Shelton (Florida), in a come-from-behind three-set win
- Planinsek was named the SEC Freshman of the Year, the first in program history to earn the conference honor
