Baseball Gets First Series Win With 11-7 Victory Over UC Riverside

HONOLULU— The University of Hawai'i baseball team extended their win streak to four games with a convincing 11-7 win over visiting UC Riverside Saturday night at Les Murakami Stadium.

The Rainbow Warriors (12-16, 5-6) captured their first series win with the victory and will have a chance at their first sweep on Sunday. The Highlanders (4-24, 2-9) have now dropped four in a row after winning three straight.

UCR got the night started with a run in the top of the first following a lead-off hit by Jacob Badawi, where he eventually advanced to third following a sacrifice bunt and an error. Jacob Shanks drove in Badawi with a single through the right side for only his third run batted in the season. Shanks capitalized again while benefiting from another error earlier in the frame, driving in Anthony Mata on a single in the third. The Highlanders added another run in the inning off a fielder's choice, making it 3-0.

The 'Bows got their offense going in the fourth as sophomore second baseman Stone Miyao reached via a walk, and junior right fielder Matt Wong knocked a single to left field sending Miyao from first to third on the heads up play. Junior first baseman Jacob Igawa answered as the third straight 'Bow to reach base, hammering a double off the center-field wall driving in Miyao and Wong, cutting the UH deficit down to 3-2.

Graduate starting pitcher Andy Archer ran into problems in the fifth as Mata reached base on a single, followed by the third error of the game, helping Shanks reach base with two outs in the inning. Senior reliever Buddie Pindel entered the game and hit the next two batters, loading the bases and forcing a run-in to make it 4-2. Joey Nicolai added to the Highlanders' luck, singling up the middle, pushing two more runs across for a 6-2 advantage.

UH battled back in the sixth and the seventh, tying the game and eventually taking the lead. In both frames, Miyao was in the middle of production. Following a walk to graduate center Cole Cabrera, Miyao fired a single to left field, sending Cabrera to third with junior right fielder Matt Wong coming to the plate. Wong singled to shortstop, scoring Miyao, putting runners at first and second with one out. Igawa hit into a fielder's choice, but a throwing error on a double-play attempt sent Cabrera home and Igawa to second, making it a 6-4 UCR lead.

The bats continued to echo "pings" throughout Les Muraki Stadium in the seventh, accounting for seven runs and five hits in the single frame. Freshman left fielder Jordan Donahue joined Miyao, Wong, and Igawa with productive run-scoring singles. Both Miyao and Donahue recorded two RBIs in the inning, giving UH an 11-6 lead.

Pindel (3-1) notched his third win, throwing two and a third innings out of the bullpen, giving up two runs, none earned, and striking out two.

Seven 'Bows collected hits on the night as Wong led the effort by going 3-for-4 from the plate, driving in two, and scoring two more. Igawa added a 2-for-4 night of his own while driving in four and recording the 'Bows lone extra-base hit on the evening.

The 'Bows will wrap up the series tomorrow with the first pitch set for 1:05 p.m. HT.
