Renne Shuts Down the Highlanders as Hawai‘i Wins Fifth Straight

HONOLULU— The University of Hawai'i baseball team continued its winning ways on Sunday, extending the current win streak to five games with a 5-1 victory over UC Riverside at Les Murakami Stadium.

The Rainbow Warriors (13-16, 6-6) completed their first sweep of the season and recorded their first sweep since a four-game sweep of UC Davis at home a year ago. The Highlanders (4-25, 2-10) dropped their fifth consecutive game and will now head home to host CSUN.

The 'Bows picked up where they left off the night before, striking first with three runs in the bottom of the second. Graduate centerfielder Cole Cabrera doubled to left-center field and swiped third for his seventh stolen base of the year. Junior first baseman Jacob Igawa picked up his 19th run batted in with a groundout to second, sending Cabrera home. After a walk to sophomore designated hitter Kyson Donahue and a double by freshman shortstop Jordan Donahue putting runners at second and third with two outs, sophomore left fielder Naighel Ali'i Calderon sent a double to right field, scoring both for a 3-0 UH advantage.

The lead continued to grow for UH as Cabrera knocked in a run in the fifth off a sacrifice fly, followed by a single from sophomore third baseman Aaron Ujimori in the sixth to drive in a run for his fourth run batted in on the series.

In his second start of the season, junior pitcher Dalton Renne (3-2) was nearly unhittable, throwing six and third innings, keeping the Highlanders without a base knock till the sixth inning. In his longest appearance of the season, he allowed five hits, one earned run and struck out four to record the win. Sophomore pitcher Tai Atkins recorded his second save of the season as he entered the game in the seventh with the bases loaded, allowing just one run to score, and shut the Highlanders down over the next two frames.

Ujimori and Kyson Donahue led the offensive production at the plate as each recorded three hits on the afternoon. For Donahue, it's his third game this season of recording three hits and his sixth multi-hit game. Calderon led the team with two runs batted in, his first two of the season.

UH will now embark on a seven-game road swing, taking them off the island of O'ahu for nearly two weeks. The first stop will be at CSU Bakersfield beginning on Thursday, April 14th, for a three-game series.
