HONOLULU – The fourth-ranked University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team rebounded from a pair of Big West Conference losses last week with a sweep of No. 5 UC Santa Barbara Friday at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center. Set scores were 25-16, 25-23, 28-26.
The Rainbow Warriors (19-5, 4-3 BWC) extended a pair of win streaks over the Gauchos – 11 consecutive overall and seven straight in Honolulu. UH also won its 14
th straight Big West home match and 22
nd consecutive regular season home match.
With six aces on the night, Hawai'i set a new single-season rally-scoring record with 178 on the year. Outside hitter
Spyros Chakas had three aces and setter
Jakob Thelle's two aces increased his season total to 48.
Chakas led the team with 11 kills while opposite
Dimitrios Mouchlias had 10 kills in 20 errorless attempts. Middle blocker
Guilherme Voss tallied four blocks and Thelle dished out 30 assists and had seven digs. As a team, UH hit .278 with six blocks.
The Gauchos (16-7, 5-3) were led by Ryan Wilcox's match-high 15 kills.
UH jumped out to an early 7-3 lead in Set 1 and made it 15-8 after back-to-back aces by Chakas. The lead hit double digits at 22-12 after a three-point spurt and the Warriors cruised to victory.
With the score tied at 7 in Set 2, Hawai'i reeled off six straight points off of
Chaz Galloway's serve for a 13-7 advantage. UH's lead was 20-15 before the Gauchos used a 6-1 run to pull within one. A Voss block followed by a Chakas ace gave UH a 23-20 cushion but UCSB answered with three straight to tie it up.
Filip Humler, who came off the bench midway through the set, recorded a kill that gave the Warriors set point and
Cole Hogland stuffed Brandon Hicks to end it.
The Gauchos again rallied in Set 3, erasing a six-point UH lead to tie it at 19. UCSB eventually took a 23-21 lead before the Warriors tied it at 23 after a pair of Gaucho errors. Hawai'i served for the match three times and on its fourth attempt, Thelle's tough serve forced a bad pass and net violation.
The teams play again on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. Following the match, three Rainbow Warriors –
Avery Enriques,
Kyler Presho, and
Max Rosenfeld – will be honored during the traditional Senior Night ceremony.
