NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team (11-7, 7-2 Big West) notched its first Big West road win in its regular season finale at CSUN, 5-2 of Sunday afternoon at the Matador Tennis Complex. The Rainbow Wahine and Matadors were tied at 2-2 early, but the 'Bows then reeled off three-straight wins for the win. The victory left Hawai'i in third place in the Big West regular season standings with a 7-2 conference record. Finishing atop the BWC standings was UC Riverside with an unblemished 9-0 BWC mark, while Cal Poly came in second at 8-1.
The Rainbow Wahine opened the match by capturing the doubles point with No. 2 Tal Talya and
Gitte Heynemans combining forces for a dominant 6-1 win over CSUN's Ekaterina Repina and Sasha Turchak. UH's No. 3 duo of
Nidhi Surapaneni and
Ana Vilcek followed with a 6-4 win over Jenna Dorian and Victoria Santibanez Luna for the 1-0 lead.
In singles, the Matadors quickly tied the score at 1-1 with No. 1 Repina edging out UH's
Satsuki Takamura, 6-2, 7-6 (1). Hawai'i's No. 6
Anna Kern held off Santibanez Luna in a tightly contested match, 7-6 (3), 7-5. CSUN's No. 2 Fraile Toboso defeated Vilcek in a first set tie-breaker and a break, 7-6 (4), 6-4 to tie the score at 2-2. Hawai'i then dug in and outlasted the Matadors with three, three-set wins for the 5-2 team victory. UH's No. 3 Zandberg bounced back after dropping the first set to defeat CSUN's Turchek by just a break in the final two sets, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5. On the No. 5 court, Surapaneni recovered after falling in the first set to knock off Dorian, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 and UH's No. 4 Heynemans battled back to finish the match with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over Magdalena Hedzak.
Hawai'i will remain on the mainland to prepare for the 2022 Big West Women's Tennis Championship tournament, which runs from Wednesday, April 27 - Saturday, April 30. This year, the tourney will be held at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif. The No. 3-seeded Rainbow Wahine will begin play in Thursday's quarterfinals at 9:00 a.m. HT in a rematch against the 6th-seed CSUN.
