Hawai‘i Baseball Routs UC Davis 17-1 to Claim Third Straight Series Win

DAVIS, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i baseball team throttled UC Davis 17-1 on Sunday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium.

The Rainbow Warriors (18-18, 11-7) bats came alive late in the game, as UH won their third consecutive series as they ended their two-week road trip.

The weekend's defensive battle continued in game three, with no runs being scored through five innings in today's contest. In the top of the sixth junior catcher, Dallas Duarte reached base on an error and took second on a wild pitch. Duarte was singled over to third, and with runners on the corners, sophomore second baseman Stone Miyao hit a sac fly to score the first run of the game. Sophomore Naighel Ali'i Calderon singled in another run and later in the inning, freshman shortstop Jordan Donahue picked up an RBI on a single through the left side. The final run came from junior third baseman Aaron Ujimori who helped put the 'Bows up 4-0.

UC Davis struck back in the bottom of the seventh when Nathan Peng hit the first pitch he saw over the left-field wall for a solo home run and the Aggies only run of the day.

The Rainbow Warriors widened their lead in the eighth as Donahue singled up the middle to get his second RBI of the day. Graduate center fielder Cole Cabrera added to the lead with a double that drove in Donahue. After a pitching change, Ujimori added the inning's third run on a single to center field. The inning's final run was a single from junior first baseman Jacob Igawa, extending the lead to 8-1.

Hawai'i poured it on again in the ninth with five runs, as sophomore Kyson Donahue started things off with a pinch-hit single to drive in two runs. Cabrera hit a sac fly on the next at-bat to drive in another run. Four batters later, with the bases load, Miyao singled home two more. Junior Matt Wong picked up his third hit of the day and an RBI following Miyao. Next, Calderon came up to bat and stroked another single for another run and kept the bases loaded. Kyson Donahue stepped in again and stroked his second two-RBI single of the inning to go up 17-1.

Junior pitcher Buddie Pindel picked up his team-leading fourth win today. He closed out after four and a third innings, where he had five strikeouts and no runs allowed.

Eight different UH players had multi-hit games, and at the same time, eight players contributed one or more RBIs. Kyson Donahue led the RBI category with four, while Wong and Calderon each had a trio of hits.

The Rainbow Warriors return to the islands for a three-game series with Cal State Fullerton. The first pitch is set for Friday at 6:35 pm HT.
