SEATTLE – The No. 8 University of Hawaii beach volleyball team went 2-1 in round-robin play in cold and wet conditions at the Husky Invitational Saturday Alki Beach. The Rainbow Wahine (20-14) bounced Oregon, 4-1,  and blanked Portland, 5-0,  before being upset by host Washington, 4-1, to close out the day.
 
Prior to this season UH had not lost to an unranked in nine years. However, the loss to the Huskies was the second to an unranked team in the last month. Despite the loss, the BeachBows earned the top seed in Sunday's championship bracket.  
 
It was also a milestone day for the pair of Anna Maidment and Sophia Russo who picked up two wins on the day. With those wins they became the winningest UH pair in dual matches with 37 spanning the last two years. The previous record was 35 held by the pairs of record shared by Emily Maglio-Kai'iwi Schucht and Ari Homayun-Amy Ozee.
 
Chilly  and overcast weather greeted the BeachBows in their second straight visit to Seattle and scenic Alki Beach. UH breezed past Oregon and Portland in the first two matches, but found a stiff test against Washington. The 'Bows won on courts four and five to take a 2-0 dual match lead. However, the Huskies won the next three courts, including a win at the top court as Chole Loreen and Natalie Robinson took down Kaylee Glagau and Brooke Van Sickle 21-15, 15-21, 15-8. The loss ended an eight-game win streak for the UH pair and was just their third loss in the last 21 matches.
 
UH enters bracket play as the No. 1 seed and will face Portland at 7 a.m. HT for a spot in the tournament finals. Host Washington and Oregon will square off right after. The third-place match is slated for 10 a.m. HT and the championship is at 11:30 a.m. HT.
