BeachBows Fall To LMU, Grand Canyon In Home Finale

HONOLULU.   – The No. 8 University of Hawai'i beach volleyball team (18-13) dropped its final home matches of the season with a pair of losses Sunday at the Clarence T.C. Ching Complex. The Rainbow Wahine (18-13) fell to No. 6 Loyola Marymount and No. 7 Grand Canyon by identical 3-2 scores to cap a highly competitive weekend of round-robin action among the three evenly-matched teams.

In the first match of the day, LMU (22-4) avenged their close Saturday loss to UH with a tight 3-2 win of their own. For the second straight day, UH gained points at the No. 1 and No. 5 flights versus the Lions (22-4). And for the second straight day the dual came down to the No. 2 court. But this time LMU got the best of UH as the pair of Marine Kinna and Avery Poppinga took down Sarah Penner and Kylin Loker 21-19, 21-13.

In the nightcap, UH faced Grand Canyon with revenge on the 'Bows' mind, following a close 3-2 loss to the Lopes on Saturday. UH got off to a great start as a straight set win by Ilihia Huddleston and Riley Wagoner at the No. 5 flight gave UH the first dual point of the evening. But the Lopes (18-6) proceed to win the next three courts in the middle of the order to clinch the win. UH ended the evening on a high note at the No. 1 flight as Kaylee Glagau and Brooke Van Sickle continued their dominance with a 17-21, 21-15, 15-12 win over Anaya Evans and Jess Vastine. It capped a 4-0 weekend by the dynamic duo, who dropped just one set over the two days of action.  Following the match, UH's Penner and Hali Galloway and were honored as part of Senior Night festivities.

The Rainbow Wahine will next head to the Pacific Northwest for the Husky Invitational, April 16-17. UH will face Oregon, Portland and host Washington in their second straight appearance in the tournament held at Alki Beach in Seattle.
