HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i baseball lost the final game of their series with UC Irvine 7-1 Sunday afternoon at Les Murakami Stadium.
The Rainbow Warriors (8-14, 2-4) have yet to win the first series of their season, while the Anteaters (15-8, 5-1) claim their second conference series win.
Sophomore shortstop
Kyson Donahue got things started for the Warriors with a solo blast to right-center field to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second.
A pitcher's duel ensued for the following four innings before a big seventh inning from UCI blew the game open. A leadoff hit batter set up a long escapade of events, including a lost replay challenge, a game put under protest, and a
Rich Hill ejection. The Anteaters capitalized and built a 6-1 lead heading into the game's final two innings.
Irvine added one more insurance run off a solo home run at the top of the ninth.
UH did not get anything going against the six-run lead in the ninth and fell 7-1.
The 'Bows had seven hits from seven players, with the lone run coming from Donahue's home run.
A bright spot for the Warriors was
Blaze Koali'i Pontes's performance out of the bullpen, where he delt four and one-third innings, only allowing two hits, no runs, and four strikeouts.
Hawai'i heads on the road to face UC Santa Barbara for a three-game set starting Friday at 2:30 pm HT. The team will stick around and play a Monday game against non-conference Southern Cal beginning at 3:00 pm HT.
