Box Score LA JOLLA, Calif.--The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team (8-1, 1-0 Big West) knocked off UC San Diego on the road, 4-2 on Monday morning. The win extended Hawai'i's win streak to eight--the longest in over 20 years. The Tritons captured the doubles point to start the match, but the 'Bows battled back in singles for the win at the Northview Tennis Courts in La Jolla, Calif.
UH's No. 1 doubles team of
Andre Ilagan and
Karl Collins got UH off to a great start, blanking UCSD's Jett Cole and Daniel Traxier, 6-0. But the Tritons followed with a 6-3 win at No. 3 with Phillip Lan and Pelayo Rodriguez defeating UH's
Blaz Seric and Killian Maitre. In the final doubles match, UCSD's No. 2 Eric Silberman and Zach Ermert edged out Simao Telo Alves and
Axel Labrunie by the slimmest of margins in a tie-breaker, 7-6 (5). It was the first time that UH lost the doubles point since Weber State accomplished the feat on Jan. 29, 2022.
Hawai'i bounced right back to win four out of the five finished singles matches in straight sets. UH's 17th-ranked Ilagan breezed past UCSD's Traxler on the No. 1 court, 6-1, 6-1 while UH's No. 4 Labrunie followed with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Rodriguez. At No. 3, Hawai'i's Collins defeated Ermert, 6-3, 6-3. The Tritons' Sahm Irvine then posted UCSD's lone singles win over
Andy Hernandez on the No. 6 court. UH's Seric then clinched the match edging out Lan in a hard fought match, 7-6 (4), 6-4.Â
The Rainbow Warriors return to the UH Tennis Complex to host three Big West matches during its final home stand this week. UH will take on Cal Poly on Thursday, March 24 at 12:00 p.m; UC Davis on Friday, March 25 at 12:00 p.m.; and UC Santa Barbara on Sunday, March 27 at 12:00 p.m. The match vs. UCSB will also be Senior Day for UH's lone senior,
Blaz Seric.
