Softball Falls In Pitcher's Duel in Series Finale at UCSB, 1-0

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.—The University of Hawai'i softball team 8-10, 2-1 Big West) dropped the series finale at UC Santa Barbara (9-19, 1-2 Big West), 1-0 on Sunday afternoon. Unlike the first two games this weekend, Sunday's game was a pitcher's duel between UH's Brianna Lopez and UCSB's Camryn Snyder at the Campus Diamond in Santa Barbara, Calif.

Lopez, who appeared in all three games this week, fell to 4-4 overall and 1-1 in conference. She fired her sixth complete game of the season in the loss. She gave up one run in the fifth while spacing five hits with three walks and four K's. For the weekend, Lopez fired two complete games and earned a save in 14.0 innings pitched. She allowed just three runs with eight waks and 12 strikeouts while holding the Gauchos to a .170 batting average. For her efforts, she accumulated a 1.50 ERA.

UCSB's Snyder improved to 7-8 overall with the complete-game shutout. She scattered three hits with three walks and four strikeouts.

Hawai'i had its best scoring opportunity in the top of the fifth. Dallas Millwood drove a single up the middle with one out. After a flyout, Brittnee Rossi drew a walk. With two outs, Nawai Kaupe rapped a single to left to load the bases, but a groundout to short snuffed out the rally.

In the bottom of the fifth, UCSB scored one run. The Gauchos drew a walk to start the frame that was followed by a single. A sacrifice bunt executed by Chloe Stewart pushed both runners into scoring position. Madelyn McNally then drove an RBI-single through the right-side of the infield allowing pinch-runner Lauren Lewis to score the game's only run.

Hawai'i's senior shortstop Nawai Kaupe racked up her sixth multiple-hit game of the year, going 2-for-2 at the plate.

The Rainbow Wahine return home to host their Big West home opener against CSUN. The two teams will battle in a single game on Friday, March 25, 2022 at 6:00 p.m., followed by a Saturday doubleheader on March 26 at 2:00 p.m.
