IRVINE, Calif. – University of Hawai'i beach volleyball players
Anna Maidment and
Sofia Russo have been named the Big West Pairs Team of the Week after winning all six of their matches in the OUTRIGGER Queen's Cup. It's the first career honor for the duo and the second straight week UH has been honored, following
Kaylee Glagau and
Brooke Van Sickle's recognition last week.
Maidment and Russo went a perfect 6-0 over the weekend while playing at the No. 3, 4 and 5 flights. They not only went undefeated, but did it in impressive fashion. Three of the wins came against ranked opponents as they defeated pairs from both No. 3 TCU and No. 10 Cal (twice). They won five of their six matches in straight sets, including all three of those against ranked opponents. For their efforts they were named the tournament's Most Outstanding Pair as UH finished in third place in the Queen's Cup.
Maidment, a sophomore from Winnipeg, Canada, and Russo, a junior from Cherry Hill, N.J., are in their second straight season paired together and their chemistry has never been better. The pair are off to a blazing 12-1 start in 2022 and have now won 11 straight matches. Over the last two years, they have accumulated a team-best 28-6 combined record.
The 9th-ranked BeachBows will have this week off before returning to action March 25-26 in the Big West Challenge in Long Beach, Calif.
