Warrior Baseball Drops Both Games of Saturday's Doubleheader

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i baseball team dropped both games of the doubleheader on Saturday against Rutgers at Les Murakami Stadium.

The Rainbow Warriors (5-10) struggled to find their bats in today's contests. Rutgers (12-2) combined for 19 runs across the 16 innings.

Game 1 – Rutgers 13 UH 1

Rutgers jumped on the Warriors early and often, scoring six in the first and added another three in the third.

UH got on the board in the third inning on a solo blast from junior first baseman Jacob Igawa for the only run of the game.

The Scarlet Knights put up their tenth run of the ballgame on a home run in the top of the fifth and followed that up with another 3-run shot in the seventh to extend their lead to 13-1.

Junior pitcher Cade Halemanu gave up eight runs on eight hits in two, and a third innings pitched.

Game 2 – Rutgers 6 UH 2

The game started fast as Rutgers jumped out to a three-run lead in the top of the first inning.

In the bottom half of the inning, graduate center fielder Cole Cabrera ignited a string of three hits with a single to left field. Two batters later, junior first baseman Jacob Igawa drove home the first run for UH. Sophomore third baseman followed suit, driving in a second run on the next at-bat before Rutgers would get out of the jam with a 3-2 lead after one.

Bats settled down as teams would threaten with baserunners, but no runs over the next five innings.

Rutgers finally broke the seal in the seventh on a pair of singles to score a run. In the following inning, a comebacker to the mound got thrown over the first baseman, putting a runner on . Rutgers cashed in and added an insurance run. Their final run came in the top of the ninth to put the game out of Hawai'i's reach.

Igawa led the 'Bows with two hits and one of the games two RBIs. Junior pitcher Cameron Hagan was a bright spot for the Hawai'i bullpen with no hits, no runs, and one strikeout in three innings of work out of the pen.

The Warriors wrap up the four-game series Sunday, with the first pitch scheduled for 1:05 pm HT.
