Men’s Volleyball Pulls Out Four-Set Win Over Lewis

HONOLULU – The fourth-ranked University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team passed the test handed by 12th-ranked Lewis, Saturday night with a four-set win at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center to complete the two-match sweep. Set scores were 25-18, 27-29, 25-19, 26-24.

The Rainbow Warriors (16-3) struggled offensively early on but their defense came up big with a season-high 47 digs along with 16 team blocks. UH held Lewis to .149 hitting.

Middle blocker Guilherme Voss contributed with a career-high 12 blocks (4 solo) while outside hitter Chaz Galloway led the offensive attack with a career-high 16 kills to go along with a career-high 10 digs for his first double-double as a Rainbow Warrior. Outside hitter Spyros Chakas added 10 kills, nine digs, and two aces.
John Davis posted match-highs of 23 kills and 19 digs to lead the Flyers (10-8).

The first set was tight until UH scored the final five points including two aces and a kill by Dimitrios Mouchlias for a 1-0 lead in the match. The second set was equally as tight with the Flyers securing the win on its fourth set point.

Hawai'i used a 5-1 run to jump out to a 12-8 lead in Set 3. A solo block and ace by Voss gave UH a 22-16 lead and helped the Warriors take a 2-1 lead in the match.

In Set 4, Lewis jumped out to a 6-1 lead. UH tied it at 12-12 and the teams traded side-outs until the Warriors jumped ahead 23-21 with a 4-0 run that included two blocks and a kill by Voss. A Chakas kill gave Hawai'i two match points but the Flyers erased both. Chakas' 10th kill and a Cole Hogland solo block – with the help of miscommunication by a pair of Lewis defenders – ended the match.

The Warriors will return to Big West Conference play with a two-match series against CSUN, March 25-26 at SimpliFi Arena.
