Chakas, Choy Lead Men’s Volleyball To Four-Set Victory

HONOLULU – Outside hitter Spyros Chakas and reserve libero 'Eleu Choy sparked the University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team to a four-set win over CSUN Friday in a Big West Conference match-up at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center. Set scores were 25-20, 25-20, 23-25, 25-19.
 
The Rainbow Warriors (17-3, 2-1 BWC) improved to a perfect 13-0 at home this season while extending a pair of win streaks – 12-match conference home win streak and 20-match regular season home win streak.
 
Chakas recorded a career-high 24 kills, hitting .488 to lead the offense while Choy, appearing in only his second match of the season, finished with four digs and successfully passed 12 of his 13 serves directed at him. Chakas only had four errors in 41 attempts along with three digs and two blocks. Choy, a Honolulu native, also dished out two assists in his most extensive time as a Rainbow Warrior.
 
As a team, UH hit .421 as a team with seven service aces and seven blocks. CSUN (5-9, 0-3) hit .279 as a team with 10 aces and 7.5 blocks.  
Kyle Hobus led the Matadors with 15 kills, three aces and four blocks. Three other CSUN players finished with two aces each.
 
UH outside hitter Chaz Galloway notched 11 kills and seven digs while middle blocker Guilherme Voss added nine kills and four blocks.
 
In Set 1, the teams traded mini 3-0 runs as the Matadors took a 15-14 lead at the media timeout. Chakas tallied back-to back kills, which capped a 4-0 run and put UH on top 19-16. The Warriors went on to out-score the Matadors 10-4 to close out the set.
 
In Set 2, Northridge used a 5-0 run for a 12-7 lead. The Warriors slowly chipped into the deficit and tied it at 18 after a 6-2 run. UH then scored six straight to get to set point and Chakas ended it for a 2-0 lead in the match.
 
Hawai'i jumped out to a 12-5 lead in Set 3, tallying eight kills in 11 swings. But the Matadors used four aces during a 10-2 run to take the lead at 15-14. The score was tied seven times before the Matadors strung together back-to-back points for a 23-21 lead. Hobus closed out the set to extend the match.
 
In Set 4, the score was tied at 8 before a 3-0 run by the Warriors capped by a Galloway ace. After a pair of Matador points, UH then went on a 6-1 run which included aces by Kāna'i Akana and Dimitrios Mouchlias for a 17-11 lead.
 
The teams play again Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
