HONOLULU – The ninth-ranked University of Hawai'i beach volleyball team split a pair of matches on the second day of the OUTRIGGER Queen's Cup at Queen's Beach. The Rainbow Wahine opened the day with a 5-0 sweep of Nebraska and fell to No. 3 TCU, 4-1, to finish round robin play at 3-1.
The Rainbow Wahine (9-4) will next meet California in Saturday's first semifinal match at 10:00 a.m., and will the play in either the third place match at 2:00 p.m., or the championship match at 4:00 p.m. UH defeated 10
th-ranked Cal on the opening day of the tournament, 3-2.
In UH's first match on Friday, the BeachBows secured the first two points of the dual with easy wins at Fights No. 2 and No. 4.
Kaylee Glagau and
Megan Widener won their match at No. 2, 21-15, 21-10 while the pair of
Sofia Russo and
Anna Maidment were victorious at No. 4, 21-8, 21-12.
In the second sets of matches, UH took the first set at No. 1, No. 3, and No. 5, then clinched the dual with a win by
Brooke Van Sickle and
Riley Wagoner at No. 1 with a 21-11, 21-19 win. The other two matches eventually went to a third set before
Sarah Penner and
Ilihia Huddleston won 15-5 at No. 3 and
Sydney Rau-Kim and
Amirah Ali pulled out their match 15-12 at No. 5.
The day's final match pitted the two unbeaten tournament teams. The first two contested flights were evenly matched but the Horned Frogs pulled out both at No. 4 where UH's Huddleston and Penner fell 21-19, 21-17 and at No. 2 where Wagoner and
Kylin Loker dropped their match 21-18, 21-17.
UH did not go down without a fight in the next set of matches, winning at No. 5, where Maidment and Russo defeated TCU's Megan Muret and Rochelle Scott, 21-17, 21-15 to close the deficit to 2-1. Flight No. 3 went to a third set before Widener and
Jaime Santer fell 15-10, clinching the match for the Horned Frogs. Van Sickle and Glagau dropped their match at No. 1, 21-13, 22-20 to close out the dual.
