Men's Tennis Advances to Semifinals With Wins Over Pacific, St. Mary's (CA)

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SACRAMENTO, Calif.—The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team (5-1, 0-0 Big West) advanced to the Golden State Tennis Invitational's semifinals after notching their fifth and sixth-straight win. The Rainbow Warriors posted a 4-2 win over Pacific on Friday at the Sacramento State Tennis Courts. The win advanced the 'Bows to the semifinal match against host Sacramento State later Friday afternoon but it was suspended with the match tied at 2-2 due to darkness. The two teams concluded the match on Saturday morning as UH emerged as the winner, 4-2 over the Hornets.
 
Match 1: Hawai'i 4, Pacific 2
The Rainbow Warriors won their fifth-straight match, doubling up on Pacific, 4-2. The 'Bows won the doubles point and won the first two singles matches to take a 3-0 lead with wins at No. 1 and 4. But the Tigers rallied to wins on Courts 3 and 2 to trail 2-3. Hawai'i's Guillaume Tattevin then clinched the match at No. 5.
 
In doubles, UH's No. 2 duo of Simao Telo Alves and Axel Labrunie dispatched Pacific's Liam Puttergill and Aleska Mardjonvic, 6-2 to start the match. Soon after, Hawai'i's Andy Hernandez and Tattevin combined to earn the doubles point with a 6-3 win over Manroop Saini and Coby McCaig on the No. 3 court.
 
Entering into doubles, the Rainbow Warriors jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead as 15th ranked Andre Ilagan dominated Mardjonovic, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1. UH's No. 2 Labrunie followed with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Pacific's Saini. The Tigers then took the next two matches to trail by just on at 3-2. UH's Tattevin then sealed the win with a 6-1, 7-6 (2) over Liam Puttergill.

The win propelled the Warriors into the semifinal match vs. host Sacramento State later on Friday afternoon. With the score tied at 2-2, the match was suspended due to darkness. It will be completed on Saturday morning starting at 7:30 a.m. HT at the Sacramento State Courts. 
 
Hawai'i 4, Sacramento State 2
Hawai'i secured the doubles point to start the match vs. the Hornets. UH's No. 1 duo of Andre Ilagan and Karl Collins held off Sac State's Mate Voros and Mark Keki, 6-4, while on the No. 3 court, Blaz Seric teamed with Killian Maitre to edge out Patrick Wong and Rudolfs Aksenoks in a match ended with a tie-breaker, 7-6 (4). 

The Rainbow Warriors went up 2-0 when Axel Labrunie defeated Patrick Wong in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2 at No. 4. Sacramento State then won the next two matches to knot the score at 2-2 when darkeness fell and the match was suspended. On Saturday morning, 17th-ranked Andre Ilagan outlasted Mark Keki, 6-2, 7-6 (5) to give UH a 3-2 lead. UH's No. 5 Guillaume Tattevin then clinched the semifinal win with a hard fought, three-set, 6-4, 6-7(2), 6-4 over Ori Maior.

Hawai'i will now face St. Mary's (CA) in the tournament championship match.
