BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i women's golf team posted rounds of 309 and 306 on the first day of The Valley Invitational at the Bakersfield Country Club.
The Rainbow Wahine sit in fifth place with a 615 total behind Day 1 leader San Francisco (591), Grand Canyon (603), CSU Fullerton (609), and Cal Poly (610). USF's Riana Mission and Cal Poly's Elizabeth Scholtes lead the individual standings at even par 144.
Freshman
Mayumi Umezu leads UH with a 7-over 151 after posting 79 and 72 on Monday and is tied for 10
th place. The Waimea, Hawai'i native posted her best round as a Rainbow Wahine with an even par on her second 18. She started the round with three birdies on her first eight holes and made the turn at 2-under. After a bogey at No. 5 put her at 1-over for her round, she rebounded with a birdie on her next hole.
Fellow frosh
Momo Sugiyama is one stroke back at 8-over 152 with consecutive rounds of 76 and is tied for 14
th. Freshman
Hyeonji Kang is in 21
st place at 155 (77-78); junior
Hana Mirnik is tied for 29
th at 157 (77-80); and freshman
Monica Johnson sits in 63
rd place at 168 (85-83).
The tournament concludes with the third and final round on Tuesday with an 8:00 a.m. PT shotgun start.
