Water Polo Splits Matches on Second Day of Barbara Kalbus Invitational

IRVINE, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i women's water polo team split matches against No. 6 Michigan and No. 1 UCLA Saturday at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational.
 
The Rainbow Wahine (8-3) picked up their second win over Michigan (9-6) on the season in a 10-8 wire-to-wire victory. For the second tournament in a row, UH met up with the number one team in the country, this time the UCLA Bruins (18-0). The 'Bows hung with the Bruins for most of the game but would fall 12-10 late in the fourth.
 
Game 1 – #5 Hawai'i 10 #6 Michigan 8
Senior Elyse Lemay-Lavoie continued her success from Friday, finding the match's opening goal. Lemay-Lavoie and junior Libby Gault scored a pair of goals in the first and took a 5-2 lead out the gate.
 
Sophomore Alba Bonamusa Boix netted her second goal in the second quarter, helping keep a 7-4 lead at the half.
 
Gault completed her hattrick late in the third, while sophomore Lara Luka got into the scoring column too.
 
In the fourth, Michigan would bring the game within one score, but with :25 left, freshman Paula Prats Rodriguez dented the back of the twine and put the game out of reach.
 
Bridget Layburn picked up her second win of the weekend, playing the match's entirety. She recorded five saves in 32 minutes.
 
Game 2- #1 UCLA 12 #5 Hawai'i 10
For consecutive tournaments, UH has found itself in a battle with the top team in the country.
 
The Rainbow Wahine and Bruins went goal-for-goal in the first half, as freshman Morgan McDowall led the charge with two goals.
 
A slow third quarter for the 'Bows allowed the Bruins to take a two-goal lead.
 
In the final frame, junior Olivia Kistler and freshman Paula Prats Rodriguez netted goals in the final two minutes of the fourth, bringing the game within one. The Bruins scored out of a timeout ending the comeback.
 
Sophomore Lucia Gomez de la Puente paced the 'Bows with three goals. At the same time, Bridget Layburn tagged three saves in her second loss of the year.
 
The 'Bows will face off against USC Sunday at 11:45 am HT in the third-place match.
