Women's Volleyball Adds Two For 2022

HONOLULU—University of Hawai'i women's volleyball head coach Robyn Ah Mow announced the signing of a pair of players for the 2022 season. The Rainbow Wahine welcome Caylen Alexander, a 6-0 outside hitter/opposite from Alpharetta, Ga., and Jaclyn "Jackie" Matias, a 5-9 setter out of Honolulu.

Alexander is a four year varsity letterwinner from Centennial High School in Roswell, Ga., where she recorded 1,086 kills, 1,067 digs and 161 service aces in her standout prep career. She is a dynamic pin-hitter who will provide athleticism and stability. She excelled at Centennial, earning multiple athletic awards—including All-State honors (2020, '22), All-Region honors (2018, '19, '20, '21), AVCA Phenom Player Watchlist (2020), Centennial HS MVP (2020, '21) and she earned All-American third team honors. She got the job done in the classroom, earning Scholar-Athlete accolades from 2018-21.

"Caylen is an athletic, high flying pin who has the ability to play on the left or right. She plays the game with a calm, confidence that is infectious to be around." says Ah Mow. "Caylen has a high ceiling and it will be very exciting to watch her grow into her own as a Rainbow Wahine."

Matias comes to UH after a standout setting career at Punahou School where she has earned three varsity letters in volleyball and one in track & field. Matias possesses a high volleyball IQ and in addition to her athletic talent she is a tenacious competitor on the court. She helped lead the Buffanblu to a league championship in 2022 while finishing second at the state tournament twice (2020, '22). As a senior, she recorded 534 assists, averaging 9.7 assists per game with 111 digs, 171 service aces and 33 total blocks. She earned all-state first team honors as a setter, and this past season, was coached by former UH All-American Reydan "Tita" Ahuna who lead the 'Bows to its last NCAA volleyball championship title in 1987.

Matias has athletics in her blood. She will be a second generation Rainbow as her father, John Matias, Jr., who was a hard-hitting first-baseman/designated hitter who still holds the single season slugging percentage record (.723) amongst other Top 10 records set during his Rainbow baseball career (1986-89). Jackie's mother is also a UH Mānoa alum who was a Rainbow dancer during her time at UH.

"We are extremely excited to add someone of Jackie's caliber and volleyball IQ to our gym," exclaims Ah Mow. "Jackie is a standout local athlete that is feisty and plays with the type of fire that cannot be taught. Her quickness and athletic ability will help as she makes her transition into the collegiate game. Jackie bleeds Green and White and I can't wait to work with her in the gym come August."
