Honolulu – The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team had its five-game win streak ended in a 62-60 loss to UC San Diego Thursday night inside SimpliFI Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.
The Rainbow Wahine (12-9, 8-3) battled back, being down big through three quarters, tying the game with 26 seconds, before a last-second shot fell for UCSD. UH Is now 0-3 against teams from San Diego this season. The Tritons (10-13, 7-7) snapped a five-game losing streak.
The 'Bows struggled in the first half, shooting 5-for-27 from the floor. UH could not get shots to fall and were outrebounded, leading to a 29-18 halftime deficit.
Shooting woes continued into the third quarter as UCSD extended their lead to 46-32. Down as much as 15 in the fourth, freshman guard
Daejah Phillips took some momentum back after an and-one cutting the lead down to 11 with 8:04. Phillips continued to chip away at the lead scoring 14 points in the final stretch. With 30 seconds left, the 'Bows managed to strip the ball away on a pass leaving freshman guard
Kelsie Imai a wide-open layup to tie the game. On San Diego's final possession, a last-second shot managed to bank off the glass and in. With Hawai'i trailing 62-60 and 1.6 seconds remaining on the clock, UH attempted to inbound the ball to the hot-handed Phillips, but it was deflected, and no shot attempt got off as time expired.
Phillips paced the 'Bows with a career-high 24 points, seven rebounds, and three assists. Sophomore guard
Nae Nae Calhoun was the only other Rainbow Wahine in double-figures with 10 points.
The 'Bows are back in action Saturday for a No. 1 vs. No. 2 conference showdown with UC Irvine. Tip-off is set for 3:30 p.m. HT.
