LIHU'E, Kaua'i – The University of Hawai'i men's golf team shot a first round 292 at the 45
th John A. Burns Intercollegiate Thursday at the Ocean Course Hokuala.
The host Rainbow Warriors got off to a strong start on the front nine, making the turn at 9-under and were tied for first place with a combined 10 birdies and one eagle. But the back nine proved tough as the team shot a collective +14 with only five birdies and six double bogeys.
UH currently sits in 13
th place in the 18-team field. 27
th-ranked Arizona leads the team standings at 275 followed by Fresno State and New Mexico (281). Individually, Cal's Simon Kwon, who is competing as an individual, shot a 7-under 65 to hold a one-stroke lead over teammate Aaron Du (66).
Freshman
Atsuya Oishi shot a 2-under 70 to lead UH and is tied for 17
th place. The Japan native opened his round with three straight birdies and was 4-under after 11 holes. A trio of golfers finished at 2-over 74 – freshman
Tyler Ogawa, freshman
Ratio Visuttipinate, and freshman
Pierce Braun, the latter of whom carded a 4-under on the front side.
Competing in his first collegiate tournament, junior
Zachary Sagayaga shot a 7-over 79 while junior
AJ Teraoka, who is competing as an individual, shot 75.
The tournament continues on Friday. After seven years at Kaua'i's Wailua Golf Course, the tournament moved to Hokuala, which features picturesque views of the Pacific Ocean.
