Softball Holds Off CSU Bakersfield; Coolen Records 1,100th Career Win

LAS VEGAS, Nev.—The University of Hawai'i softball team (1-4, 0-0 BWC) captured its first win of the season, holding off CSU Bakersfield, 7-5 on the final day of the Rebel Kickoff in Las Vegas, Nev. The victory marked head coach Bob Coolen's 1,100th career win which was celebrated at UNLV's Eller Media Stadium. He is the 30th head coach in the NCAA DI to reach the 1,110 win milestone.

Coolen, who is in his 31st season at the helm of the Rainbow Wahine program now has a 1,100-745-1 career record which included five years as the head coach of Bentley. This is his 33rd season at UH as he served two seasons (1990-91) as an assistant to then head coach Rayla Allison. Coolen currently has a 1,028-652-1 record at Hawai'i. There are only four coaches who have won over 1,000 wins at UH—Jim Scwitters (m/w tennis), Dave Shoji (women's volleyball), Les Murakami (baseball) and Coolen. He is the second longest tenured coach at Hawai'i, only sailing's Andy Johnson has served longer at 32 years.

Hawai'i took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Dallas Millwood led off lacing an opposite-field single to left-centerfield. She worked her way to third and later scored on an Izabella Martinez sacrifice fly line out to left for the early advantage.

UH extended its lead to 3-0 in the third as Maya Nakamura cleared the bases with a two-run single up the middle.

The Roadrunners got a run back in the bottom of the third on an RBI single to left by Samantha Pech.

Hawai'i added two runs in the fifth. UH started with three-consecutive singles by Maya Nakamura, Millwood and Brittnee Rossi. On Rossi's single up the middle, Nakamura crossed the plate. Later, Martinez continued the hit parade with an RBI single to score Rossi to give UH a 5-1 lead.

Later in the fifth, Maya Williams lifted a double in the leftfield corner to drive in two runs, closing their deficit to 6-4. The 'Runners kept the rally going, loading the bases with just one out. But the 'Bows got the force out at home (second to catcher) and a fly out to left to end the inning.

In the top of the seventh, Borges drove her first collegiate home run over the centerfield fence. She is the first pitcher to hit a homer since Kanani 'Āina Cabrales did so against Portland State on Feb. 26, 2016. The 'Bows would lead 7-4 going into the bottom of the seventh.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Roadrunners got a solo home run by Williams to close to within two runs, but UH got a groundout to short to end the game.

Hawai'i starter Brianna Lopez earned her first collegiate win with 4-1/3 innings pitched. She allowed three runs on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Borges came in relief and fired the final 2-2/1 innings and held the Roadrunners to two runs on two hits with a pair of walks  and a stikeout.

CSUB's starter Reina Castillo threw the first four innings, giving up six runs on 10 hits with a walk. Reliever Kasey Kennedy tossed the final three innings, holding UH to one run while spacing four hits with a two walks and a strikeout.

The Rainbow Wahine return home to host Chaminade in an exhibition doubleheader on Friday, Feb. 18. First pitch scheduled for 5:00 p.m. at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
