Hawai‘i Gives Oregon State a Scare, Falling 61-60

CORVALLIS, Ore.-- The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team came up short Monday evening in Gill Coliseum to Oregon State, 61-60.

As time dwindled to the final seconds and the score tied at 60-60, Talia Von Oelhoffen missed a layup with four seconds on the clock. The ball was knocked loose, trickling towards the near sideline and heading out of bounds. Several players dove for the ball, and with 00.4 on the clock, a loose ball foul was called 45 feet away from the basket on sophomore Deajah Phillips. After a review, the referees awarded OSU with two free throws, as Noelle Mannen hit the second of the two for the 61-60 lead. Following a timeout by UH, junior Olivia Davies took the inbounds pass for a long three attempt, coming just shy of the rim for the final.

The Rainbow Wahine (0-1) start the season with a loss for the third consecutive year. The last time UH came away with a win in the opening game of a campaign was in 2019 with a 61-58 win over San Diego State at home. The Beavers (1-0) will continue their four-game home stretch to open the year with the second contest of the four against Seattle on Thursday. The last time the 'Bows began a season with a win on the road was in 2015 at Grand Canyon, 74-41.

The first quarter featured a fast start by the 'Bows as they went on a 16-4 run after being tied at 2-2 in the opening moments. UH went five-for-five from three to start the game for an 18-6 advantage, leading to a 20-10 lead to end the quarter. The Beavs answered with a 10-0 spurt to start the second quarter, tying the game at 20-20, leading to a 30-30 score going into the half.

A 14-6 run by OSU started the third quarter, hitting 50% from the field, compared to the 'Bows' 33% through the 10-minute frame, leading to a 48-38 OSU lead with 3:42 on the clock. UH ended the quarter on a 6-0 run, with Phillips scoring all six points to bring it within four at 48-44 heading to the fourth quarter.

The Beavs added to their lead to make it 54-46, but UH answered with an 8-0 run, tying the game at 54-54 with 5:25 to play in regulation. The two squads traded buckets, playing to a 60-60 tie before the controversial final.

Phillips and sophomore guard Lily Wahinekapu led the UH attack with 12 points each, while Phillips added five rebounds and five assists to her stat line. Nine of the 'Bows who saw action scored in the game.

As a team, UH hit 12-of-32 from three-point range, compared to the Beavs hitting 6-of-17 from long distance. The size advantage favored OSU, but UH kept the rebounding battle close, with the Beavs holding a 31-26 advantage.

UH will now look towards Wednesday as they continue their two-game road trip to start the season with a visit to Portland. The 'Bows fell to the Pilots last season at SimpliFi Arena 91-77 and will have a chance at redemption with tipoff set for 3:00 p.m. HT.
