Hawai‘i Concludes Rainbow Wahine Showdown with Loss to No. 2 Stanford

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team dropped its second consecutive contest with a 68-39 loss to No. 2 Stanford on Sunday on the final day of the Rainbow Wahine Showdown inside SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.

The Rainbow Wahine (1-6) fall to 0-12 all-time against Stanford and conclude a 10-day stretch of action with five consecutive home games, including three straight in the showdown. The Cardinal (8-1) took home the tournament trophy with a three-game sweep over UH, Florida Gulf Coast, and Grambling State.

Except for the opening few minutes, Stanford led nearly the entirety of the game, beginning with a 23-2 run in the first quarter after trailing UH 5-2 at the 6:56 mark. Stanford outworked the 'Bows through the first half shooting over 40% from the floor and beyond the arc while hitting a perfect 12-of-12 from the free throw line. The size of the Cardinal showed a significant advantage as they outrebounded UH 21-12 in the first 20 minutes and outscored the green and white in the paint 16-6.

UH hung with the national powerhouse in the third quarter, outscoring them 15-11. The fourth frame mirrored the first three quarters, with Stanford imposing their will with a 17-7 advantage over 10 minutes.

Sophomore guard Lily Wahinekapu battled throughout the afternoon, accumulating a team-high 12 points, shooting 4-of-6 from the field, and playing 30 minutes. Freshman post player Imani Perez continued her upward progression with seven points and six rebounds in 29 minutes.

UH was held to a season-low 39 points, hitting just 26% from the floor and committing 20 turnovers, resulting in 25 points off those turnovers for the Cardinal.

UH will now take time to regroup as they'll have 14 days between games after playing seven games from November 7th to the 27th. The 'Bows have two games remaining on their non-conference schedule, with UNLV visiting on December 11th and a trip to San Jose State eight days later on December 19th.
