Women's Volleyball Overpowers UC San Diego in Three

LA JOLLA, Calif.—The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team (17-6, 14-1 Big West) swept UC San Diego on the road, 25-14, 25-19, 25-15 at the Lion Tree Arena in La Jolla, Calif. The Tritons did not have an answer on how to slow down the Hawai'i offense which hit a combined .363 for the match. The Rainbow Wahine were led by junior outside hitter Riley Wagoner who racked up a match-high 14 kills while recording her 10th career double-double. Junior middle Amber Igiede came through with 12 kills and a match-high .571 hitting percentage.
 
Wagoner hit .482 with just two errors in 25 swings. She scooped up 11 digs—tying her with Talia Edmonds for the team-high. For Wagoner, it was her fifth double-double of the season and her 15th double-double kill an 10th double-digit dig match of the season.
 
For Igiede, it marked her 21st match with 10+ kills and the ninth-straight and 19th match in which she's led UH in blocks. She was in on a match-high six total blocks (tying her career high with three solo blocks). She also had a pair of service aces, two digs, and assist to fill out her stat line.
 
Libero Tayli Ikenaga was the third Rainbow Wahine to record double-digit digs with 10. It was 13th match with 10+ digs. Setter Kate Lang issued 38 assists and added four digs, a service ace and a block.
 
The two teams tied five times early on to start the match, but after the score was knotted at 8-8, UH went on a 5-0 run with Caylen Alexander serving giving the 'Bows a 12-8 lead. Later with Kendra Ham serving, UH reeled off six straight points to extend their lead to 20-10. Hawai'i would cruise to take Set 1, 25-14.
 
Hawai'i scored four-straight with Igiede behind the service line for an early 6-3 lead. The Rainbow Wahine slowly to pull away. A 4-to-0 run with Lang serving allowed the 'Bows to go up 10-4. UCSD would rally to close to within two points at 11-9, but Hawai'i responded by scoring five-straight to lead 16-9, forcing the Tritons to call a timeout. The Rainbow Wahine would win Set 2, 25-19.
 
The Rainbow Wahine raced out to a 5-1 lead to start Set 3, forcing a timeout by UCSD. UH never looked back leading the third frame from wire to wire. A six-point Hawai'i scoring run with Wagoner serving pushed UH's lead to 9-2. Hawai'i would lead by as many as 11 and coast to win Set 3. 25-15.
 
As a team, Hawai'i hit a combined .363 (49-12-102). The one hour,  20 minute game time tied UH's fastest match (CSUN (Oct. 21). The Rainbow Wahine out hit the Tritons, in kills (49-to-28), hitting percentage (.363-to-.127), service aces (5-to-2), digs (50-to-38) and blocks (7.0-to-2).
 
UC San Diego was led by Ava McInnes' 10 kills, Izzi Strand's 24 assists, and Naya Dong's match-high 13 digs.
 
The Rainbow Wahine have a quick turnaround as they take on UC Irvine at the Bren Events Center on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 3:00 P.M. HT.
