RIVERSIDE, Calif.—The University of Hawai'i cross country team concluded the conference schedule with The Big West Championships on Saturday, placing eighth overall while turning in all-time performances at the Agriculture Operations Cross Country Course.
Senior Caelan Miller took the "what have you done for me lately" mantra to heart as she recorded a time of 21:00.7 in the 6k, a mark of second all-time in the UH record book. Miller improved her time from the Bronco Invitational on Oct. 15 by 22 seconds. Compared to earlier in the season on the same course for the UC Riverside Invitational, Miller outdid her time by 25 seconds. Her finish on Saturday placed her 26th overall, the best finish for UH in the conference championship since Camille Campos placed seventh overall in 2016.
"Super effort by the team today," said head coach
Tim Boyce. "The entire squad smashed their course times from September and represented well. Proud of this group; looking to be fully healthy in two weeks to conclude the season."
Senior Sophia Morgan followed Miller's performance, crossing the finish line at 21:20.03 for the 37th position, outdoing her previous course time from a month ago by 25 seconds. Morgan also finished a spot higher in the 2022 championships compared to 2021.
Freshman Keilah Wilkes shattered her personal best in the 6k by 20 seconds at 21:46.7 for 48th, narrowly missing the top 10 of the UH records. Fellow freshman Ania Magdesian showcased the most significant jump in time by 40 seconds, finishing at 23:32.2, compared to her time of 24:03.0 from mid-September. Sophomore Sam North, who turned in a top-10 time two weeks ago in Sunnyvale, Calif., did not compete in the championships due to injury.
Cal Poly knocked off the defending champion UC Davis with 63 points, while the Aggies recorded 64 points, but claimed the individual championship with Brianna Weidler clocking in at 19:28.6. Her finishing mark is the best in the conference championships in over a decade and was 20 seconds better than the No. 2 finisher.
The Rainbow Wahine will have one more meet to conclude the season on Nov. 11 with the NCAA West Regional in Seattle, Wash.
