Women's Volleyball Earns Road Sweep at UC Riverside

RIVERSIDE, Calif.—The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team (13-6, 10-1 BW) started their fourth roadtrip with its sixth conference sweep of the season, downing UC Riverside, 25-21, 25-15, 25-15 win on Thursday night at the SRC Arena. Hawai'i held the Highlanders to a .074 hitting percentage while not allowing any UCR player to post more than seven kills.

The win marked UH head coach Robyn Ah Mow's 99th-career win in five seasons. She now sits with a 99-35 overall record.

Junior middle blocker Amber Igiede tied her career-high with three solo blocks and was in on a total of 8 blocks while recording her 17th-straight double-digit kill match with a match-high 11 put-downs. She had just one error in 20 attacks for a .500 hitting percentage.

Junior outside Braelyn Akana hit for an efficient .692 hitting percentage pounding down 10 kills with an error on just 13 swings. It marked the third time this season that Akana has tallied 10 or more kills. She added three blocks and a dig in the match.

Sophomore setter Kate Lang recorded her sixth double-double of the season dishing out a match-high 26 assists with 12 digs.

Junior outside hitter Riley Wagoner had eight kills and hit .100, but she helped the 'Bows with a team-high 13 digs while dealing out a career-high three service aces.

For the first time since missing three matches due to injury, sophomore libero Tayli Ikenaga reached double-figures with 10 digs while adding three assists and a service ace.

Hawai'i jumped out to a quick 9-1 lead via an 8-0 scoring run with Wagoner serving. But the Highlanders were not phased and kept fighting and rallied for a 13-to-3 run which erased their deficit and tie the set at 19-19, forcing UH to call a timeout. UH would score three-straight coming out of the break on a service ace by Caylen Alexander which was sandwiched by kills by Westerberg and Wagoner to inch ahead, 22-19. Back-to-back kills by Braelyn Akana gave UH set point and Wagoner ended the frame with the kill, 25-21.

Hawai'i again raced out to a quick 5-0 lead to start Set 2. This time though, the 'Bows would keep their foot on the gas as they extended their lead to 11 off an 8-to-2 run for a 15-4 lead. The Rainbow Wahine scored in little bunches to lead by as much as 12 points at 24-12. UC Riverside staved off three set points before a Highlander service error gave the 'Bows a 25-15 Set 2 win to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

UC Riverside took their first lead of the match to start Set 3 and held off UH until the 'Bows was able to leapfrog past the Highlanders at 7-6. An eight-point Ikenaga service run provided breathing room for the 'Bows at 15-7. Hawai'i ended the match out-scoring UCR, 17-8 in the final set to close the match winning 25-15.

As a team, the Rainbow Wahine led UCR 40-28 in kills, 38-28 in assists, 6-3 in service aces, 53-41 in digs, and 10.0-4.0 in blocks. It marked the second time this season that UH held their opponent to a sub .100 hitting percentage and the fifth time not allowing an opposing hitter to reach 10 kills in the match. It is the fifth time that UH has double-digit blocks this season. Hawai'i never trailed until the beginning of the third set. All but one Rainbow Wahine was able to get into the match.

The win marked UH head coach Robyn Ah Mow's 99th-career win in five seasons. She now sits with a 99-35 overall record.
