The Aggies opened the match fast and hit the ground running from the first serve. UCD led by as many as seven early at 12-5 and UH was unable to recover. Hawai'i closed to within two points at 17-15, but UC Davis then put their foot on the gas and scored the final eight of nine points to capture Set 1, 25-16. The Aggies out-hit UH .452-to-.176 to start the match.
Hawai'i flipped the script in the second set, jumping out to a nine point lead at 12-3. A six-point service run—highlighted by a pair of Ham service aces and a pair of blocks. From that point, the two teams traded several sideouts but it was the 'Bows who closed out the set, winning five of the last six points to win Set 2 going away, 25-12 to tie the match at a set apiece.
After two lopsided sets, the third set was a battle between UCD and UH. There were 10 times but UH never trailed in Set 3. Hawai'i had built a five point lead at 18-13, but their advantage quickly evaporated on a 4-0 run by the Aggies to trail by one at 19-18. UC Davis staved off three set points before the 'Bows were able to hold off the charging Aggies, 28-26.
UC Davis took their momentum into Set 4 as they jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead and never looked back as they held off UH to force a deciding fifth set. UH would close their deficit to just a single point twice, but both times the Aggies would respond by pulling away and never allowed the 'Bows to catch up as UCD went on to take Set 4, 25-19.
Hawai'i never trailed in the fifth and deciding set. The 'Bows scored the first three points but the Aggies rallied right back to tie it at 4-4. UH led 11-7 forcing the Aggies to call a timeout. The 'Bows would end the match on a 7-to-3 run to win 15-9.
Statistically, the Aggies led UH in hitting percentage (.305-to-.304), assists (60-to-56) and blocks (11.0-to-9.0). Hawai'i edged out UCD in kills (64-to-63), aces (7-to-6) and digs (58-to-57).
