FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Hawai'i football team fell in heartbreaking fashion for the second time in as many road trips in a 17-13 loss at Colorado State on Saturday.
The Rainbow Warriors (2-6, 1-2 MW) led by 10 at half and 13-10 with 8:44 left in the game, but the Rams (2-5, 2-1 MW) went on a 13-play, 80-yard touchdown drive over the next 7:16 to score the game-winning touchdown. CSU running back Avery Morrow finished off the drive with a 10-yard score with 1:28 left on the clock.
UH had a chance to march down and score a go-ahead touchdown of its own, but
Brayden Schager had a pass picked off on the fourth play of the drive, sealing the game for Colorado State. The final drive capped off a tough second half for the Rainbow Warrior offense, as they finished with just 38 yards of offense on 17 plays after halftime.
Hawai'i put up the only points of the opening quarter, scoring on its opening drive for the second straight game as
Matthew Shipley converted a 27-yard field goal to cap off an 11-play, 65-yard drive.
The Rainbow Warriors then came up with a goal-line stand on Colorado State's opening drive, stopping the Rams after a 67-yard run set them up at the one-yard line.
Peter Manuma came up with a pass breakup on fourth down to keep CSU off the board.
The Rams tied things up with a field goal on their first drive of the second quarter, but Hawai'i responded with the first touchdown of the game on the ensuing drive. Schager went 6-of-6 for 51 yards on the drive, capping it off by finding
Caleb Phillips for a one-yard score to make it 10-3 with 7:15 left until halftime.
After the Hawai'i defense came up with another fourth-down stop on the next Colorado State drive, the 'Bows drove down and added a field goal to take a 13-3 lead at halftime. The Rainbow Warriors went 60 yards over the final 1:26 of the half, with Shipley connecting on a 23-yard field goal just before the clock expired to cap off the drive.
Colorado State cut into the UH lead coming out of halftime, marching 75 yards in 10 plays. Morrow finished off the drive with a one-yard touchdown on fourth down, cutting the Hawai'i lead to 13-10.
The Rams continued to move the ball on their ensuing drive, but the Rainbow Warrior defense held up again in the red zone, coming up with their third fourth-down stop of the day on a fourth-and-one play at their own 10-yard line.
Hawai'i held its third-straight opponent to under 17 points, marking the first time since 2009 that a UH team has accomplished that.
Logan Taylor turned in a huge game defensively, recording 16 tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss, becoming just the third different UH player since 2000 to have at least 15 tackles and 1.5 TFLs in a game (
Darius Muasau – twice, Julian Gener).
Schager finished the game 18-of-30 for 173 yards with a touchdown and an interception, marking the fourth straight game that he has thrown a TD pass.
Dedrick Parson ran for 71 yards on 15 carries while also catching a team-high six passes for 29 yards.
The Rainbow Warriors return home next week to host Wyoming at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletic Complex on Oct. 29 at 6 p.m.
