MALIBU, Calif.—University of Hawai'i men's tennis players Axel Labrunie and 24th-ranked Andre Ilagan both advance in singles to the Round of 32, while a pair of UH duos—Andy Hernandez/Kilian Maitre and Karl Collins/Ilagan moved on to the doubles Round of 32 at the ITA Southwest Regional in Malibu, Calif. on Thursday.
 
The opening day started with doubles. The Hawai'i duo of Hernandez and Maitre pulled away from San Diego State's Liam spiers and Andrew Saleh, 8-2 while Ilagan and Collins joined forces to defeat the Aztecs' Euginio Gonzalez and Mathieu Josserand, 8-4. With the wins on Thursday, both UH pairs advance to Friday's Round of 32. The final Hawai'i doubles team of Labrunie and Guillaume Tattevin fell to Cal Poly's Joseph Leather and Bastiaan Weststrate, 8-5.
 
In singles, three Rainbow Warriors won their opening Round of 128 matches. Kilian Maitre was able to hold off UC San Diego's Jeff Cole in a hard-fought three sets, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4. Andy Hernandez knocked off UC Santa Barbara's Alexander Watanabe Eriksson by a break in both sets, 7-5, 7-5 and UH's Karl Collins cruised to a 6-4, 6-2 straight-set victory over Cal Poly's Zachary Pellouchoud. Both 31st-seeded Labrunie and fourth-seeded Ilagan had opening round byes.
 
Labrunie and Ilagan both won their Round of 64 matches to advance to the Round of 32 on Friday, Oct. 21. Labrunie fought off San Diego State's Andre Saleh in a first set tiebreaker then doubled up on the Aztec for the win, 7-6 (1), 6-3. Ilagan dropped the second set against Grand Canyon's Jonathan Da Silva, but nearly blanked Da Silva in the third and deciding set for win in three, 6-3, 5-7, 6-1.
