In 1962, the University of Hawai'i Rainbow Football team returned to intercollegiate competition and hired its first head coach, Jimmy Asato. The 1962 team played four collegiate teams and four club teams ending their season with a 6-2 record.

On Homecoming night, September 17, 2022, a 60th Anniversary celebration was held for the 1962 team with a Pre-Game Reception hosted by the Na Koa Football and Letterwinners Club at the Letterwinners Clubhouse. It was followed by an on-field recognition of the team members at the first time out in the first quarter. Participating team members included:

Defensive Back: Eugene Tokuhama
Running Back: Ben Ronquillio
Tackle: Buzzy Hong
Tight Ends: John Carrol, Albert Ikeda
Wide Receiver: Bobby Au
And representing Head Coach Jimmy Asato who passed earlier this year was his son, Jay Asato. Jimmy Asato was a star running back for UH from 1949-1952 and later served as an assistant coach before becoming the head coach from 1962-1964.
