Box Score HONOLULU--The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team opened the 2022 season with Day 1 of the Weinman Foundation Invitational on Thursday. Hawai'i battled hard, but was able to come up with one singles win against stiff competion from Pac-12 teams, California and Washington State.
In doubles, UH newcomers came up short, falling to Washington State's Fifa Kumhom and Stefaniea Mikhailova, 8-7. Cal's Jessica Alsola and Erin Richardson doubled up on UH's Gitte Henemans and Lea Roman, 8-4, while WSU's Michaela Bayerlova and Savanna Ly-Nguyen won by the same score over Hawai'i's
Satsuki Takamura and
Nidhi Surapaneni.
In singles, Takamura was the lone UH winner for the day. She came back after dropping the second set to defeat the Cougars' Ly-Nguyen, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2. Four other UH matches went to three sets. Rainbow Wahine
Tal Talya Zandberg opened with a tie-breaker win in the first set, but WSU's Kumnom took the final two sets, 6-7 (2), 6-0, 6-1. Rainbow Wahine newcomer Surapaneni also captured her first set against Cal's Makenna Thiel, but dropped the final two sets, 4-6, 6-0, 6-3. UH's Lea Romain even things by winning the second set against Cal's Valentina Ivanov before losing the deciding set, 6-2, 3-6, 6-0 and the newest Rainbow Wahine,
Ana Vilcek, blanked Cal's Erin Richardson in the second set, but came up on the losing end, 6-4, 0-6, 6-2.
The three teams will continue play in the Weinman Foundation Invitational on Friday at the UH Tennis Complex at 9:00 a.m.. For the safety of all the student-athletes and staff, no fans are allowed in the UH Tennis Complex this week.
