HONOLULU--The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team opened the 2022 season hosting the first day of the Hawai'i Invitational on Thursday. Hawai'i, BYU, and California all kicked off the season in Honolulu at the UH Tennis Complex.

In doubles, the Rainbow Warriors fell in both matches with Blaz Seric and Karl Collins falling to BYU's Jack Barnett and Tennyson Whiting, 8-1, while UH's Simao Telo Alves and Kilian Maitre dropped their match to 
Cal's Phillip Hjorth and Michael Wright, 8-3.
 
Hawai'i's Axel Labrunie and Simao Telo Alves both notched wins on the opening day. Labrunie had a strong match against BYU's Mateo Vereau, blanking his opponent in the first set then holding him off by a break, 6-0, 6-4. Alves also knocked his opponent off in straight sets, pulling away from BYU's Dominik Jakovljevic, 6-3, 6-2. UH senior Seric, started off with a bang, taking the first set against California's, Yuta Kikuchi. But Kikuchi rolled in the final two sets for the win, 4-6, 6-0, 6-2. UH newcomer Karl Collins came up just short against Cal's Carl Emil Overbeck losing boths sets by a break, 7-5, 6-4. 

The three teams will continue with Day 2 of the Hawai'i Invitational on Friday starting at 2:00 p.m. at the UH Tennis Complex.
