Men's Basketball Opens Big West Play At Long Beach State

HONOLULU In its first game in 16 days, the University of Hawai'i men's basketball team opens up Big West action when it plays at Long Beach State on Saturday, Jan. 8. Tipoff is 1:00 p.m. PT/11:00 a.m. HT at the Walter Pyramid.

The Rainbow Warriors has had its last four games canceled due to COVID, including its first three conference tilts. Long Beach State, meanwhile, saw six straight cancellations and went 23 days without competition before defeating NAIA squad Westcliff University on Wednesday night and falling at UCLA on Thursday night.

GAME STORY LINES
  • The Rainbow Warriors enter their 10th season in the Big West having never recorded a losing regular-season league record.
  • UH, which went 9-9 last season in the Big West regular season, was selected fifth in the preseason coaches poll and sixth in the preseason media poll.
  • UH comes into the game having last played more than two weeks ago on Dec. 23. A short-handed UH squad  lost to South Florida, 76-69
  • The Rainbow Warriors are led by guard Noel Coleman who is tops in the Big West in scoring (18.0 ppg), three-point field goals per game (3.0) and three-point field goal percentage (.500).
  • After missing nearly three games due to injury, Coleman has returned the last three contests to average 25.3 ppg on 68% from the field and 68% on three-pointers (15-22).
  • This will be the 34th all-time meeting between UH and LBSU with the Beach leading the series 18-14, including 11-2 in Long Beach.
  • The 'Bows defeated the Beach twice last year in Honolulu by a combined five points.
  • The last five meetings have been decided by a total of 12 points (2.4 margin/game)
  • The 'Bows are 5-4 all-time in Big West openers and 4-5 in their first Big West road game. 
  • After playing at LBSU, UH will return home for games versus UC Irvine (Jan. 13) and UC San Diego (Jan. 15).
