Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Atwell's Milestone Night Leads Hawai‘i to Third Straight Win

HONOLULU, O'ahu – Saturday proved to be a historic one as the University of Hawai'i women's basketball team upended CSU Bakersfield 73-66, and graduate forward Amy Atwell became the 23rd member of the 1,000 point club while dropping a career-high 33 points.

With 2:45 on the clock and the Rainbow Wahine (7-7, 3-1) leading 64-56, Atwell hit a step-back three-pointer to eclipse the 1,000 point milestone, cementing her name in the UH record books. The 'Bows closed out the Roadrunners (1-10, 0-2) in the final moments, handing them their 10th consecutive loss.

The three by Atwell gave her a new career-high but added two more free throws in the closing minutes for her new career mark and second 30-point game of the season. She added 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season.

UH battled through the first 20 minutes, despite Bakersfield going up against nine points in the second quarter. UH fought back with their own 10-0 run late in the second quarter, which allowed them to go into the half down 34-30.

The 'Bows were able to put the pressure on early in the third quarter, regaining the lead at 42-40. The 'Bows were able to extend the lead to four and take a 51-47 lead into the final frame.

Aside from Atwell's historic night, the UH benched played a vital role in the team's third straight win, notching 33 points. Freshman forward Daejah Phillips led the way with 13 points off the pine, including hitting 9-of-10 from the charity stripe. As a team, the home squad went 25-of-32 from the line.

UH will look to ride the momentum into the week with a road trip to visit UC Santa Barbara and CSUN, beginning on Thursday.
