Sumida Nets Two Goals in 3-2 Loss to CSUN

WAIPAHU-- The University of Hawai'i soccer team came up short 3-2 in the Big West Conference opener with CSUN on Thursday night at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Complex.

The Rainbow Wahine (0-5-1, 0-1-0) dropped their first match to CSUN since 2017 and started the conference portion of their schedule at 0-1, for the eighth time in nine seasons. The Matadors (2-9, 1-0) snapped an eight-match losing streak with the win, marking their first win since beating Iowa State on August 22nd.

UH started strong as they scored in the 17th minute for a 1-0 lead. Following a corner kick by junior midfielder Morgan Meza, the ball took a bounce to sophomore midfielder Eliza Ammendolia for a header to sophomore forward Kelci Sumida. The Honolulu native found the net for her second goal of the season with a flick of her right foot, sending the ball over the keeper's head.

CSUN didn't stay down for long as they scored in the 29th minute to even the score before halftime, followed by two more goals in the second half, building the lead to 3-1.

Sumida wouldn't give up and made things interesting in the final minutes. Junior forward Kayla Ryan sent a ball sailing over Sumida's head, but she was able to slow it down with a jumping kick to corral the ball. She swooped from the right side of the box to beat a defender, sending a slap shot from her left foot to beat the keeper for her second goal of the evening and her team-leading third score on the year in the 86th minute.

Over the final four minutes, the Matadors played keep away, leading to the eventual 3-2 final. The 'Bows played the aggressor throughout the night as they led in shots fired at 11-8, but CSUN capitalized on their chances, scoring three goals on five shots on goal.

UH, will now go on the road for a rare home and away match weekend to faceoff with Long Beach State on Sunday at 3 p.m. HT. The Beach will enter the day at 1-0 after knocking off UC Davis in their conference opener on Thursday.
