LONG BEACH, CALIF.— The University of Hawai'i soccer team dropped its second consecutive Big West Conference matchup with a 3-1 loss to Long Beach State on Sunday night at George Allen Field.
The Rainbow Wahine (0-6-1, 0-2-0) are currently 1-8 in conference opener road games since joining the Big West in 2012. The Beach (5-4-1) have won back-to-back contests after not registering a win in three straight matches against non-conference opponents.
Freshman forward
Trini Quiroz picked up her first career goal in the last minutes of the match, scoring off a perfectly placed corner kick by junior midfielder
Morgan Meza. Quiroz soared over the defenders with a header finding the back right corner of the net. After starting the season scoreless in their first four matches, UH has notched at least one goal in each of the last three.
The first score of the night went to the Beach in the 19th minute. Coming off a corner kick attempt, Lena Silano, the Big West Conference leader in goals scored, collected the loose ball and notched her seventh goal of the season.
As the 'Bows battled trying to find opportunities against the stingy defense of LBSU firing 11 shots on the night. The Beach capitalized with two counters on the aggressive approach with two goals, eventually building the lead to 3-0. Quiroz's goal in the 89th minute led to the eventual final.
UH will return home for two matches later this week, beginning with Cal Poly on Thursday at 7 p.m. HT, followed by UC Santa Barbara on Sunday at 5 p.m. HT. In 2019 the 'Bows tied with the Mustangs and dropped a 3-1 match to the Gauchos. Just like this season, both were home matches for UH.
