SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.—University of Hawai'i men's tennis players
Andre Ilagan and
Axel Labrunie continued action in the Battle in the Bay Classic on Thursday at the California Tennis Club in San Francisco, Calif.
Ilagan began his tournament in the Singles Main Draw, notching a win over Michigan's Nick Beaty in a third-set super tiebreaker, 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (3) in the Round of 32. The match began with Ilagan dropping the first set but rebounded to even the match by cruising 6-2 win in the second set. With each player knotted at one set apiece, the match came down to a supertiebreaker, where Ilagan outlasted Beaty, 10-3.
Ilagan advanced to the Round of 16 to play against Southern California's Stefan Dostanic later in the afternoon. The two battled fiercely, but Dostanic held on to edge out Ilagan in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6 (3), ending Ilagan's run in the Main Draw.
Lablrunie competed in the qualifying consolation back draw on Thursday. He battled back to defeat San Francisco's Stevie Gould, 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (6).
Ilagan and Labrunie also took part in the doubles qualifying which also started on Thursday. The Rainbow Warriors fell by a break to the USC duo of Paul Barretto and Samuel Rubell, 8-6.
Both singles and doubles matches for Ilagan and Labrunie will continue through the weekend at the tournament.
