'AIEA, O'ahu – The University of Hawai'i women's golf team dominated the competition at the HPU Sharks Shootout Monday with a 599 total in the 36-hole event held at the Pearl Country Club.
The Rainbow Wahine won by 58 strokes over Division II schools Hawai'i Pacific and UH Hilo while junior
Hana Mirnik grabbed medalist honors. UH swept both titles for the second consecutive year after
Monica Johnson won the individual title a year ago. The team title marked the sixth all-time in program history.
UH posted rounds of 296 and 303 for a 23-over par and all seven golfers – five team and two individuals – finished among the top eight in the player leaderboard. Mirnik shot a 1-under 143 after an even par 72 on Monday to finish six strokes ahead of teammate
Momo Sugiyama (73-76=149), a freshman from Gold Coast, Australia competing in her first collegiate event.
Two more newcomers
Focus Jonglikit and
Ting-Yu Liu took third and fifth, respectively. Jonglikit, sophomore transfer from Kent State, shot 151 (76-75) while Liu, a freshman from Taiwan, carded 156 (76-80). Freshman
Mayumi Umezu of Waimea, Hawai'i, rounded out the team scoring at 162 (82-80) for seventh place.
Defending champ Johnson finished sixth at 159 (81-78) while sophomore
Kralyn Salazar tied for eighth place at 163 (81-82).
HPU's "A" team was runner-up in the team standings at 657 followed by UH Hilo (673) and HPU's "B" team (698).
The Rainbow Wahine will next compete at the Coeur D'Alene Resort Collegiate Invitational, Sept. 19-21 in Idaho.
