2021 Position Breakdown: Middle Blockers

Throughout the course of fall camp, HawaiiAthletics.com will provide a breakdown of the 2021 Rainbow Wahine volleyball team, position-by-position, as the team prepares for its season opener at Fairfield on Friday, Aug. 27. 

The biggest returning strength is Hawaii's middle blockers. Both starting middles from 2019 return with Amber Igiede and Skyler Williams. The pair amassed 397 kills, 234 blocks and 76 digs and the pair both earned All-Big West first team honors, with Igiede earning VolleyballMag.com All-American honorable mention honors. Igiede and Williams are joined by freshman Anna Kiraly who has been on campus practicing and training since the fall of 2020.

Amber Igiede – SO – 6-3 – Baton Rouge, La. – St. Michael the Archangel
The top returning point scorer from 2019 with 287.5 points, Igiede led the Rainbow Wahine in 2019 with 125.0 total blocks including 20 solo blocks. The Baton Rouge native led the Big West in both total blocks and blocks per set (1.24) as the sophomore earned VolleyballMag.com Freshman All-America honorable mention honors in 2019 and AVCA All-Pacific North Region honorable mention, while earning All-Big West first team honors.
 
Skyler Williams – SR – 6-1 – Bellflower, Calif. – Mayfair HS
The longest-tenures Rainbow Wahine Returns the second-most points from from 2019, Williams returns 246.5 points and the second-most blocks with 109 on the team. The middle blocker ranked 27th in the country in hitting percentage on the season (.387) and ranked third in the Big West in blocks per set (1.12) and total blocks (114). Williams had a season-high 13 kills in two different matches, recording 13 kills against Army (9/5/19) and against Missouri (9/21/19). Williams had a perfect hitting percentage with nine kills against Sacramento State (9/6/19) and a .818 hitting percentage against Northern Colorado with nine kills in the NCAA Tournament (12/6/19).
 
Anna Kiraly – FR – 6-3- Kistarcsca, Hungary – Premontrei Iskolakozpont
Is the first-ever Rainbow Wahine volleyball player to hail from Hungary. Kiraly is a highly decorated player and helped lead her Godolloi Roplabda Club team to the Central Hungarian Regional Championship 1st place in 2017; U21 Hungarian Championship 2nd place in 2019; and the U19 Hungarian Championship 3rd place in 2017,'19. Kiraly spent the 2020-21 school year in Manoa training with the Rainbow Wahine but is classified as a freshman because the NCAA extended an extra year of eligibility to all fall student-athletes in 2020-21.

She is a two-time Hungarian Championship "All-Star Tournament Team Player" ('18 U19, '19 U21) and was named her club's Player of the Year in 2018. Kiraly also earned the U19 Hungarian Championship "Best Player of the Tournament" award in 2019. Kiraly has played eight matches with the Hungarian Youth National Team and earned a spot on the Senior National Team roster.
