Women's Volleyball Falls to UC Davis

HONOLULU — The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team closed its first Big West homestand of the season with a four-set loss to UC Davis on Saturday at Bankoh Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.

A night after pulling out a five-set win over UC Riverside, Rainbow Wahine (5-8, 1-1 Big West) dropped a tight opening set then battled back to take the second. The visiting Aggies (6-4, 2-0) then ran away early in the third and fourth sets to claim the 25-23, 23-25, 25-12, 25-13 win.

UH middle blocker Miliana Sylvester put together one of her most efficient offensive performances of her career with 11 kills in 16 attempts with just one error to hit .625. The sophomore was also in on four of UH's 11 blocks.

UH freshman Cha'lei Reid posted 10 kills in her ninth double-digit performance of the season before leaving the court with an injury in the fourth set. Libero Victoria Leyva posted a match-high 17 digs in the back row.

Adrianna Arquette finished with 20 assists, six kills seven digs and two aces while sharing time at setter with Audrey Hollis, who added 13 assists.

UH hit a season-low .047 for the match and finished with a split of the homestand.

Brooke Hibino led UC Davis with 15 kills and Jade Light, the Big West's kills leader, added 12.

The teams traded the lead seven times and battled through 11 ties before UCD edged out to a 20-18 lead. UH battled back to tie it at 23-23 on a block by Arquette and Way. After a UC Davis timeout, Jade Light scored to give the Aggies set point and a UH attack error ended the set.

UH took a 16-11 lead in the second before UCD went on a 7-1 run to take its first lead of the set. UH caught the Aggies at 21-21 and tied the set two more times when Kāhea Moriwaki came off the bench and her serve led to a UCD error to give UH set point. After a timeout, Arquette and Way combined on a block to give UH the set and even the match.

UC Davis took command early in the third and opened up a 12-4 margin. The Aggies remained in control through the end of the set to reclaim the lead in the match.

UC Davis rolled the momentum into the fourth set and again built a 12-4 lead on their way to winning in Honolulu for the second straight year.

The Rainbow Wahine head out on their first conference road trip of the season to play at CSU Bakersfield on Oct. 3 and at CSUN on Oct. 4.
