HONOLULU − University of Hawai'i right handed pitcher
Aaron Davenport was drafted in the sixth round of the 2021 MLB First Year Player Draft by the Cleveland Indians on Monday.
Davenport, who completed his third season with the Rainbow Warriors and has two seasons of eligibility left was taken 186th overall and became the second player in the past two seasons to be drafted on the second day of the MLB Draft (
Jeremy Wu-Yelland, 2020, Boston Red Sox, 4th Rd.).
Davenport and Wu-Yelland are the first Rainbow Warriors to get drafted in the first 10 rounds in back-to-back seasons since 2009-11 when Vinnie Catricala (2009, Seattle, 10th Rd.), Josh Slaats (2010, Colorado, 5th Rd.), Greg Garcia (2010, St. Louis, 7th Rd.), Kolten Wong (2011, St. Louis, 1st Rd.) and Lenny Linsky (2011, Tampa Bay, 2nd Rd.) all went in the first 10 rounds in three straight seasons.
Davenport posted a 3.74 ERA in 2021 with a 3-6 record. The right-handed pitcher posted the most strikeouts on the team for the second-straight year (97 strikeouts), striking out double-digit batters in two different starts including 13 against Hawai'i Pacific (3/4) and at Cal State Fullerton (4/30).
The Duvall, Wash. native started the first game of every series in 2021 and was named an All-Big West honorable mention.
Davenport set career-highs in innings pitched (8.1) against UC Santa Barbara and struck-out a career-high 13 batters against Hawai'i Pacific.
The righty struck out nine-plus in four separate starts.
During the pandemic-shortened season in 2020, Davenport posted the second-most wins in the country (4) and beat #2 Vanderbilt in Nashville, striking out eight in 6.0 scoreless innings.
