SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i baseball team dropped both games of Saturday's doubleheader at Cal Poly, 5-4 in the first game and 14-4 in the second game.
Game 1:
Hawai'i was on the unlucky end of a 5-4 walk-off walk in the bottom of the ninth inning after the Rainbow Warriors (24-25, 16-23 Big West) had taken the lead in the top of the ninth inning.
Left fielder
Jacob Igawa led off the ninth with a single and was pinch run for. First baseman
Alex Baeza then reached on a fielder choice and was also pinch run for by sophomore
Tyler Best. A pinch hit single by freshman
Konnor Palmeira put runners on first and second for catcher
Tyler Murray who walked to load the bases.
A wild pitch by Cal Poly scored Best who was at third base, and then a pinch-hit single by freshman
Stone Miyao scored the go ahead run.
In the bottom half of the inning, a throwing error allowed a lead-off baserunner for the Mustangs who got caught in a rundown between second and third on a liner back to sophomore relief pitcher
Cameron Hagan.
A one-out double tied the game. An intentional walk and then a hit by pitch, by freshman
Tai Atkins who had replaced Hagan, loaded the bases. Atkins was replaced by redshirt freshman
Tyler Dyball with a 2-0 count. Dyball threw three pitches and walked the winning run.
Sophomore starter
Cade Halemanu (5-2) threw 7.0 innings and struck out six in his final start of the season, allowing three earned runs on five hits.
Game 2:
Hawai'i was out-hitting Cal Poly (30-25, 20-19 Big West)in the doubleheader finale going into the seventh inning, but three UH errors helped the Mustangs to the doubleheader sweep via run rule, 12-4 in seven innings. Both teams finished the game with 11 hits.
Hawai'i scored first for the second-straight game, but a three-run inning followed by a five-run fourth inning and then a six-run seventh gave Cal Poly the walk-off win.
Both redshirt juniors
Adam Fogel and
Dustin Demeter had three hit games in the game.
The two teams will conclude their seasons on Sunday at 10 a.m. HT.
