HONOLULU – University of Hawai'i men's basketball head coach
Eran Ganot announced that the Rainbow Warriors have signed junior college guard Amoro Lado out of the College of Southern Idaho. The 6-2 guard will have three seasons of eligibility upon joining the 'Bows.
Lado was named to the All-Region 18 first team this past season after averaging 11.7 points and shooting 47 percent (62-133) from three-point land for a CSI squad that was ranked in the top 10 nationally. The sophomore guard also added 3.3 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.2 steals per game, while shooting 81 percent from the free throw line. Lado helped the Golden Eagles (21-4) to the Scenic West Athletic Conference title, a Region 18 championship and the No. 3 seed in the NJCAA National Tournament.
"Amoro is an incredible shooter with terrific range and will immediately bring defense and toughness to our backcourt," Ganot said. "We've really enjoyed watching his progress at one of the nation's best JC programs in CSI. He's had an inspirational journey and has worked hard to be where he is today. We're extremely excited about Amoro's future and can't wait for him to step on campus and become a valued member of our Hawai'I community."
Lado, who is of Sudanese descent, was born in Cairo, Egypt, grew up in San Diego, Calif., and attended high school in Idaho. He was the two-time state player of the year while suiting up for Vallivue High School in Caldwell, Idaho where he averaged 24.8 points per game. That scoring average was the highest by a player in the 4A/5A classifications in more than two decades. Following his stellar high school career, Lado spent one season at Chipola College in Florida before returning to Idaho.
Lado is the second guard and fifth player overall to sign with the Rainbow Warriors this spring. So far, the signing class includes three Division I transfers and one player each from the junior college and high school ranks.
