FULLERTON, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i baseball team took their frustration of Friday night's loss in extra innings out on Cal State Fullerton and the baseball in a doubleheader sweep on Saturday.
Designated hitter
Dustin Demeter extended his hot hitting with his fourth and fifth home runs in the past three weekends after hitting two in the second game of the doubleheader. Demeter had six RBI in the second game of the day, the most RBI by a Rainbow Warrior since
Ethan Lopez in 2019.
Center fielder
Adam Fogel has now hit multiple hits in seven-straight games, the longest streak since 2019 when
Ethan Lopez had six-straight games with two-plus hits.
Game 1:
Sophomore
Cade Halemanu went a career-high 8.2 innings with a career-high 10 strikeouts before surrendering his first run in the bottom of the ninth inning of the first game.
Hawai'i (22-15, 14-13 Big West) got on the scoreboard early, scoring two runs in the second inning. First baseman
Alex Baeza doubled to right center to score Fogel, and then third baseman
Stone Miyao singled to score Baeza.
After left fielder
Scotty Scott doubled to open the sixth, a one-out single by Fogel scored Hawai'i's third run of the game.
The Rainbow Warriors scored a fourth run in the top of the ninth inning via a walk, groundout and a Titan fielding error.
Miyao extended his multi-hit streak to six games with a two-hit game, while Scott had a three-hit game, while Demeter and Fogel each had a pair of hits.
Sophomore
Cameron Hagan picked up another save entering in the bottom of the ninth with two outs, throwing just four pitches to ice the game.
Game 2:
Demeter jumped on the Titans in the first inning of the second game of the day with a solo home run to right field. The designated hitter's fourth home run in the last three weekends.
The rest of the team started piling it on the Titans (18-20, 11-8 Big West) in the fourth inning. With a 3-0 lead, the Rainbow Warriors plated six runs on four hits. Left fielder
Safea Villaruz-Mauai singled to open the inning and then singled later in the inning driving in two runs. Demeter had a bases clearning double driving in three and Kaler plated a run on a single.
Hawai'i scored three more runs in each of the seventh and eighth innings.
Demeter hit his second home run of the game in the top of the ninth after homering in the first inning.
Just about matching Halemanu and sophomore
Aaron Davenport's 10 strikeout outings the previous two games, sophomore Lii Pontes struck out a career-high nine Titans over 5.0 innings. Pontes gave up five runs but still earned the win.
Junior
Buddie Pindel came in for his third save on the year, throwing 4.0 innings of five hit, 1 earned run work going the necessary 3.0-plus innings to earn a save when the score was beyond a 3-run game.
Three different Rainbow Warrrios had four-hit games in the second game of the day, with Demeter and Kaler being joined by freshman Villaruz-Mauai having a career-best day at the plate with four hits.
