Men’s Tennis Shuts Out Tritons On Senior Day

HONOLULU, O'ahu – The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team finished their home schedule with a dominant sweep over Big West Conference newcomer UC San Diego, 7-0, Monday afternoon at the UH Tennis Complex.

The Rainbow Warriors were successful throughout the match, taking points on all doubles and singles courts with the majority of singles games being played only to two sets. Hawai'i now improves to 3-3 overall and 2-3 in the BWC after snapping a three-match losing streak.

Following the match, seniors Lucas Labrunie, Tristan Martins, and Blaz Seric walked the red carpet as their teammates celebrated the trio during a Senior Day ceremony.

In doubles, UH's No. 2 duo of Seric and Axel Labrunie swiftly handled UCSD's Marc Isaia and Cody Duong, 6-0 followed by the No. 1 duo of Andre Ilagan and Lucas Labrunie, who clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 win over Zach Ermert and Daniel Traxler, 6-2. UH's No. 3 duo of Martins and Simao Telo Alves finished off the doubles sweep on court No. 3 with a deuce set win over Phillip Lan and William Lan, 7-5.

Singles also came easy for the 'Bows, where they swept all six singles matches and clinched the match on the No. 3 court where Seric smoothly dealt with Phillip Lan, 6-1, 6-2. The first two to finish were Martins on court No. 5, where he blanked Isaia, 6-0, 6-0. Similarly, Axel Labrunie outmatched Duong on the No. 4 court, 6-2, 6-0.

The 'Bows continued to outrun the Tritons in the remaining matches, with Hawai'i's No. 1 Ilagan surpassing Traxler in two sets, 6-2, 6-3. Adjacent to the No. 1 court, the No. 2 court also fell to Hawai'i with Lucas Labrunie defeating Ermert, 6-3, 6-4. The match ended on the No. 6 court, as Telo Alves needed a third set super-tiebreaker to finish off Neil Tengbumroong, 6-7 (6-8), 6-2, 10-4.

The Warriors will now prepare to finish their 2021 regular season schedule with a road matchup against Big West opponent UC Davis Saturday, April 10 at 10:00 a.m., in Davis, Calif.
