HONOLULU - The No. 8 University of Hawai'i women's water polo team finished off a two-game sweep of Long Beach State 9-5 in a non-conference matchup at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex. The Wahine (3-1, 1-1 BW) wrapped up their two-game series moving to a three-game win streak.
Hawai'i extended the all-time series record to 29-7 and continued its five game win streak against LBSU.
After a slow start and the Beach netting the first goal of the game, the 'Bows never let up and continued to fight. Nearly a minute later, freshman
Lucia Gomez de la Puenta dented the twine. LBSU followed up with another goal, yet that did not stop junior
Ann Inoue from tying the game. With 30 seconds left freshman
Lara Luka added her name to the scoreboard giving the 'Bows a 3-2 lead.
Gomez de la Puenta started the second quarter with a bullseye to the back of the cage which was the only goal to finish the half.
In the third quarter, junior
Carmen Baringo found the net while a man up. The Beach returned with back-to-back goals leaving the Rainbow Wahine only up by one goal. With a little under two minutes left, redshirt junior
Lalelei Mata'afa scored in a powerplay to give the team some space.
Seconds after the start of the final quarter, Gomez de la Puenta scored again. LBSU netted one last goal midway through the quarter before Baringo and Luka secured the win, each with an additional goal.
Junior
Molly DiLalla finished the day with six saves and two steals. Junior
Danielle Brown filled some time as goalie in the second half recording two saves. Gomez de la Puenta led the team in scoring with three goals and four assists. Sophomore Emma Van Rossum continued to be a powerhouse on defense with six steals in the game.
Up next, the 'Bows will travel to Santa Barbara, Calif. to face UCSB in a two-game series on April 10 and 11.
