The University of Hawai'i women's golf team is the third seed in next week's Big West Conference Championship, which runs Monday, April 19 through Wednesday, April 21 at the Yorba Linda Country Club in southern California.
The Rainbow Wahine will be seeking their first-ever Big West title. UH's highest finish in recent years was runner-up in 2015 and third place in 2017. This year's team heads to the championships with arguably one of their best chances. Hawai'i has three Top 3 team finishes on the year and a national ranking of No. 118.
UH's contingent for the championship includes
Hana Mirnik,
Zoey Akagi-Bustin,
Monica Johnson,
Ali Schmunk, and
Kralyn Salazar. Mirnik is coming off a third place finish at the Cowgirl Classic where she shot a final round 6-under 66, setting a new single-round school record. The Wichita State transfer leads the team with a 76.5 scoring average followed closely by senior Akagi-Bustin, who sports a 76.9 average. Both golfers have three Top 10s this season.
Long Beach State is the two-time defending tournament champion. Last year's event was canceled due to the pandemic. Cal Poly is the top seed followed by UC Davis, UH, LBSU, UC Irvine, Cal State Fullerton, UC Riverside, CSU Bakersfield, and CSUN.
The Rainbow Wahine will tee off with Cal Poly and UCD at 7:30 a.m. PT on Monday. The tournament runs three days – 18 holes each day – at the 6,235-yard, par-72 course.
